iOS 6 - Full Overview

iOS 6 is the new operating system by Apple which was released on the 19th of September. Having personally used the OS on an iPad and an iPhone I can say straight away that this OS is a big improvement over iOS 5. With the ‘Tap to Tweet’ and the ‘Post to Facebook’ function it makes tweeting and updating your status so much easier than before.

Now onto Maps, in iOS 5 maps were provided by Google, but Apple’s contract/licensing with Google has now expired, so Apple has made its own version of Maps. Incidentally called Maps, anyway this version looks so much better than Google’s version. But when in use, it does have its problems. Like when I type in a place which would work with Google’s mapping system, Apple’s version doesn’t take me to the correct place. My address, for example, no longer works with Apple’s new system. 3D doesn’t really work in the UK apart from places like central london either, that is a problem but it wasn’t there on Google’s system, so we are not missing out on anything.

Some minor changes like the status bar at the top changes to blue when in applications, but nothing to write home about.

Siri has been improved but Apple’s personal assistant still needs some work, one cool new feature is you can ask Siri to open Apps. Just say ‘Launch Twitter’ and it loads up. A feature that really should have been included in the original version of Siri.

Now to Passbook, I won’t go deep into it but to me it looks like Apple has lost its way in making half decent 1st party apps. I don’t even understand how it works. That’s another App in my folder called ‘Junk Apps’. It’s strange that, they are all Apple Apps.

Anyway, that’s about all for this post.

Thanks,

Matt.

This is Matt's first post for GS. He makes tech reviews on YouTube but recently decided to make short films and do work for GeekSlam as well.
In the future you'll see articles and some graphic design work from him, possibly even some videos too.
You can follow him on Twitter above :)

My full review of iOS 6 is coming in the next 2 weeks.)
